How to Manage Your Kid’s Angry Outbursts

What should you do when your kid has angry outbursts? Even more, what do you do those outbursts lead to destruction?

That’s what one mom asked me recently.

My boy turns into the Hulk when he is mad! What do I do?

Not sure about you, but I can totally relate to her. My son used to have angry outbursts multiple times a day. It was brutal.

So, in today’s episode, I discuss the challenges of parenting an explosive child. Then, I share how we can handle our kids’ angry outbursts even when they’re destructive.

Let’s get to it.

Angry Outbursts in My Own Home

Years ago, we were in the thick my son’s explosive behavior. He:

  • hit,
  • kicked,
  • bit,
  • screamed,
  • scratched,
  • threw everything,
  • and more.

It was awful. And sadly, I felt completely isolated navigating his angry outbursts on my own.

None of the “perfect-mom” Christian parenting strategies worked.

In the end, it took years for me to realize that my explosive child needed a different approach to parenting.

Ultimately, this required me to SHIFT MY THINKING.

When Anger Turns to Destruction

Today we discuss two of the four steps of the 4-step parenting framework in my book, Behind the Behavior.

  1. Relationship
  2. Emotional Vocabulary

In the episode, I specifically walk a special mom through her scenario with her then 3-year-old son.

Despite the fact that her son was 3 at the time, these are the exact steps I recommend using with any child.

Self-Regulation Support

Step by step, we’ll walk through her son’s destructive and angry outbursts. After that, we’ll discuss how to navigate these explosions with more confidence.

In addition, we’ll address self-regulation and executive functioning.  Even better, we’ll hit on God’s utter genius.

Ahem… He made our kids SMALLER than us when they don’t have a fully developed prefrontal cortex.

Who knew it’s ok to not freak out when our little kids hit us?

I’ll tell you why it’s ok to take a deep breath and respond differently.

Dealing With Angry Outbursts

So, that’s why we’re here today. Listen in, be encouraged, and regardless of age or diagnosis, know that these principles work. You’ve got this, Momma!
