10 Best Children’s Bibles for Special Needs Kids

Are you looking for children’s bibles for a special needs child? If so, you’re in the right place.

I’m always on the lookout for mom-recommended children’s books. Even more so, I’m excited when I hear of great children’s bibles.

Often kids with ADHD and Autism struggle with speech and language. That’s certainly been the case in my home.

Through the years, I’ve learned to use books like children’s bibles as a way to help my kids develop their speech and language.

So today, I’m sharing 10 of my favorite children’s bibles. Additionally, I share how to use them for kids with ADHD, Autism, and dyslexia.

Are your favorites on the list?

What Makes a Children’s Bible Special Needs?

The children’s bibles I chose are not specifically written for special needs kids.

However, each one is formatted to be accessible to kids of different developmental levels.

I focused on several factors when making this list of children’s bibles for kids with special needs.

  • Each children’s bible must be visually engaging.
  • The language level is accessible for kids with speech and language challenges, including dyslexia.

As with all learning, it’s crucial to remove barriers to best equip kids to receive and process what we long to impart to them.

When it comes to equipping kids with an understanding of the love of Jesus, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Best Preschool Children’s Bibles

The following list of children’s bibles is appropriate for preschool-age children.

This does not mean that an older child should not use these bibles.

What this means is that these are often accessible to kids once they hit the general preschool age.

Focus on your child’s developmental level and not the age range.

Ready? Let’s get to it.

1. The Biggest Story ABC Bible

No products found.

The Biggest Story ABC Bible is a beautifully illustrated board book for younger children. This is a favorite story book bible that’s simple and engaging.

Each page has one large letter of the alphabet along with a one-line catechism-type truth from Scripture.

The Biggest Story ABC Bible is perfect for the wiggly child with little attention span.

The colorful pictures and the simplicity of the text makes for a quick but powerful read.

2. The Rhyme Bible Storybook

No products found.

The Rhyme Bible is a new one in our home. It’s already one of our favorite children’s bibles!

Like many kids with special needs, my son has speech and language delays. Therefore, I seek out books that support his phonological awareness.

The ability to rhyme is an essential reading skill that many struggling readers don’t have.

The Rhyme Bible Storybook is full of captivating illustrations and intentional wording that’s highly engaging.

Use this bible to support your child’s developing relationship with Jesus.

And enhance critical speech, language, and reading skills.

3. The Beginner’s Bible

No products found.

The Beginner’s Bible is brightly illustrated with cartoon images of biblical characters.

While using simple language, this children’s bible covers a vast number of bible stories.

If you have an older child with a speech and language disorder or other processing issues, try this children’s bible.

Many kids (with or without special needs) need simplified language to grow in their language skills.

4. The Big Picture Story Bible

No products found.

The Big Picture Story Bible shares many foundational stories from Scripture. The title is spot on.

This children’s bible is BIG. It’s a curl-up-in-mom’s lap storybook bible because it’s the size of a dictionary.

Besides being massive, this children’s bible has its spin on presenting Scripture to children. It is written in “sections” of the larger story of Scripture.

For kids who have ADHD-like behaviors, I recommend reading it in smaller chunks.

Favorite Bibles Ages 7 & Up

This next section of the list contains children’s Bibles that can generally be read to kids ages 7 and up.

Again, this age range is not set in stone.

Use your judgment. You are the expert of your child.

5. God’s Good News Bible Story Book

No products found.

While exploring the Billy Graham Library, my daughter and I found God’s Good News children’s bible. It does not disappoint.

The images are captivating, and the text is solid.  Each story begins with a portion of Scripture and then continues from there.

God’s Good News is written in a way that allows biblical concepts and the beauty of the Gospel to shine through.

6. The Jesus Storybook Bible

No products found.

The Jesus Storybook Bible is hands down one of the most beautifully written children’s story bibles I’ve ever read.

It was adapted by Sally Lloyd-Jones and illustrated by the artist Jago. The Jesus Storybook Bible is written from creation to Revelation as one cohesive story.

This narrative offers children a greater understanding of the Bible with every story pointing to Christ. The language and illustrations are powerful.

Honestly, even adults will be blown away by this depiction of Scripture.

7. The Jesus Calling Bible Storybook

No products found.

The Jesus Calling Bible Storybook is written by Sarah Young of the popular Jesus Calling series of devotionals.

She and illustrator Carolina Farias created this children’s story bible. It’s appealing to both younger and older children.

The illustrations are incredibly engaging. Each narrative in this children’s story bible ends with a devotional.

The Jesus Calling Bible Storybook is unique in that each devotional is written from the perspective of Jesus.

Objections to Jesus Calling?

Some have expressed concern about “putting” words into Jesus’ mouth.

When I read these to my kids, I always preface these devotionals with this simple shift in language:

“This is something Jesus might say to us, you, etc…”

All in all, I think The Jesus Calling Bible Storybook is a wonderful addition to any family collection.

8. The Biggest Story: How the Snake Crusher Brings Us Back to the Garden

No products found.

The Biggest Story: How the Snake Crusher Brings Us Back to the Garden is fantastic.

It’s one children’s bible that I rank up there with The Jesus Storybook Bible.

I’d describe both as family story bibles because they appeal to a wide age range.

The author, Kevin DeYoung, points to Christ by retelling pivotal stories from the Bible.

The illustrator, Don Clark also illustrated the Biggest Story ABC bible storybook.

He has a captivating style of art that grabs the attention of the entire family.

9. The Action Bible: God’s Redemptive Story by Sergio Cariello

No products found.

Comic book lovers, artists, and anyone breathing will LOVE this children’s bible.

Every child learns differently.

Some kids are auditory learners, and some are kinesthetic learners. Almost all kids benefit from visual input.

The Action Bible is the most breathtaking children’s bible I’ve ever seen. Its visual representations make Scripture come alive

Additionally, it covers more Scripture than any children’s bible I’ve ever read.

I recommend The Action Bible to every Christian child and adult.

It’s that good!!!

10. I Wonder: Exploring God’s Grand Story

No products found.

I Wonder Illustrated Bible is visually captivating. The reason I chose to add it to the list of children’s Bibles for special needs is twofold.

  1. The illustrations are stunning.
    • Many neurodivergent children are visual learners and there’s power in pictures.
  2. Word choice
    • Author, Glennys Nellis, has a gift with words.
    • She creates powerful word pictures that beautifully capture her reader’s attention.

I recommend the I Wonder Illustrated Bible for older children and teens with a creative and imaginative bent.

Another bonus is that I Wonder Illustrated Bible is available FREE with your Kindle Unlimited subscription.

Children’s Bible for Special Needs Kids

I hope one of these children’s bibles helps you support your child’s special needs.

Whether your child has ADHD, Autism, or dyslexia, providing your kids engaging visuals is priceless.

Snuggle up, crowd out all the noise, and flood your minds with the joy of the Gospel.

    • You’re the best ever, Crystal!!! I really love the Jesus Calling Story Bible even for my girls. It really is so sweet and I always read that part to them at the end as, “This is what Jesus may say to us,” and then I always insert our names and change the pronouns to match. Sweet memories with that one. xxoo
