Asking yourself, “What’s my identity in Christ?” and need a printable to help?
Years ago, I wrestled with this question because I wanted my daughters to understand that their identity came from Jesus. At that time in their young lives, they were struggling with their first friendship issues.
And I couldn’t make them feel better. I couldn’t fix it. Ultimately, I knew that their hope could not be in me. It had to be in Christ.
So, the first thing I did was remind them that their identity was rooted in Christ. As I stared into their little girl faces, I realized I needed more clarity for us all.
I’d spent decades in bible studies, memorizing Scripture, and leading ministries. And yet, attempting to fix the emotional boo-boos of my daughters forced me into deeper study.

So, today, I’d like to walk together through Scripture with the goal of better understanding our identity in Christ.
Further, I’ve created a My Identity in Christ printable. After we walk through the promises of God, we’ll discuss practical ways to use them in your daily life.
Together, let’s pray for freedom as we answer the important question.
“What is my identity in Christ?”
To do this, we’ll go to the right place… the Bible.

What is Identity?
Who am I? Why am I here?
You and I aren’t the first ones to tackle the identity issue. Throughout history, people have asked the existential questions that comprise personal identity.
But, what exactly is identity?
Well, I guess it all depends on who you ask. If you ask non-Christians about identity, you learn that identity encompasses a number of variables:
- memories,
- experiences,
- relationships,
- personality traits,
- and values that create one’s sense of self
Some researchers have opened up the study of identity to include a person’s habits as part of the whole of a person’s identity.
Within the church as with most people groups, identity has been traditionally based on group identity.
Over time, personal identity slowly developed as a concept. Some credit this modern view of identity to Augustine.
Our Definition of Identity
Today we’ll use the term identity to define how we see ourselves as individual women living as Christ-followers within the church and the world.
So what makes our identity in Christ so unique?
Let’s dive into Scripture with fresh eyes and see what treasures we find.
Identity in the Modern World
Unhealthy messages come at us daily. Like many other women, you may find yourself navigating the pressure daily.
You just need to hop on social media for a few minutes to experience it.
- Am I a good enough mother?
- Do I bring in enough income?
- Why can’t I keep my house as clean as she does?
- Am I pretty enough?
- Does my boss even respect me?
Unfortunately, it’s not just the world and culture that have a lot to say about who we’re supposed to be.
Identity in the Modern Church
Depending upon your circumstances, you may feel pressure from your local church.
In recent times, we’ve become flooded by Christianese messages from the Christian Influencer community.
We hear things like:
- Be like the Proverbs 31 woman
- (Why does no one talk about her multiple servants??!!)
- If you have a quiver of arrows (lots of children), then you’re blessed.
- Why aren’t you married yet?
- You, the wife, are supposed to stay home and raise the children.
- Your job is to support your husband no matter what.
Regardless of where you land on any one issue here is not the point. The point is that we women have a lot of conflicting messages coming at us on a daily basis.
In our humanity, we’re going to fall victim to comparison traps at times. When this happens, the only thing to do is to take a deep breath and remember the way God defines us.
My Identity in Christ Printable Starts in the Bible
The following 17 qualities shed light on our true identity in Christ as Christian women.
All Scripture references are in the NIV (New International Version).
Many self-help gurus recommend positive self-talk by speaking positively to oneself through daily affirmations.
As Christians, we can lean on the truth of Scripture and use the following seventeen Scriptures as daily Biblical affirmations.
1. I’m a New Creation
God’s Word tells us that when we accept the free gift of grace that comes from Jesus Christ, we’re a new creation.
Literally, we become a new person with an identity God gives us out of the riches of His grace.
This means nothing we’ve done in the past defines who we are now. We’re no longer defined by our:
- job,
- family of origin,
- educational status,
- skin color,
- ethnicity,
- hobbies,
- not even our nationality
As Christians, our spiritual identity is one of freedom in Christ first and foremost.
Valuable Part of Our Stories
This doesn’t mean that our job, skin color, ethnicity, and such aren’t valuable to our sense of self and purpose. Not at all.
These areas of our lives are often beautiful parts of our stories. Thanks be to God.
However, when we pull back the layers of how we see ourselves in our small part of God’s story, we can rest.
We rest because we know that if we lose our job, our identity in Christ is not shaken change.
Life in Christ means our old self no longer defines us.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone, the new is here!
2 Corinthians 5:17
The Word of God tells us that you have been given a new identity in Christ. You’re a new creation.
Memorize Scripture with Song
If you want an easy way to memorize Scripture, use song.
This one by The Rizers is amazing.
Listen once or twice (no matter how old you are) to memorize 2 Corinthians 5:17 for good.
2. I’m a Child of God
Perhaps like me, you’ve experienced the loss of a parent. I lost my mother suddenly in 2018 and the grief still comes in waves.
While I don’t want to replace my mother, the Bible tells me that I’m a child of God.
Friend, in John 1:12, we are called His children.
Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God!
No matter whether your relationship with your parents is healthy and flourishing or if it’s painful and messy, God is your Heavenly Father.
He loves you deeply, Friend.
3. I Have the Mind of Christ
Friend, Scripture tells us through God’s Holy Spirit we have access to the mind of Christ. This is incredibly powerful if and when we struggle with negative self-talk.
As human beings living on this side of eternity, there’s nothing to be ashamed of when we struggle emotionally.
In His great love for us, there is no shame ever.
However, when we catch ourselves doubting our core identity or our value here on earth, we can cling to this.
We’re His.
We have the mind of Christ.
1 Cor. 2:16
Friend, You are a daughter of God. With Christ in you, you have access to new ways of thinking.
4. I’m Free from Condemnation
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Romans 8:1
This is my favorite Bible verse for many reasons.
Specifically, like so many before me, I’ve lived from a mindset of shame for a long time.
Praise be to God, however, that He’s freeing me from the lie that tells me I’m responsible for everyone’s happiness.
When negative and condemning thoughts enter my mind, I’m free to rest in the truth that I’m free from condemnation.
Sweet sister, you are forever free from condemnation.

5. I’m Equipped
God calls us to love. Scripture is very clear that Jesus is love (1 John).
Jesus told His disciples to share Him with the world. This means we are called to love others well on His behalf.
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
2 Tim 3:16-17
At times, you may feel overwhelmed by the call to serve and love others well. I know this all to well in my own battle for my family.
When this happens and all seems impossible, remember, that the Lord has equipped you.
Friend, even when it looks like a mess, He’s equipped you and is working through you and in you.
6. I Live in His Marvelous Light
Friend, the most important thing to remember when considering your identity in Christ is this. Jesus is the light of the world.
He said so Himself in John 8.
I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.
John 8:12
The best part is that He didn’t just stop there.
He continued by telling His followers that anyone who follows Him walks in that light with Him.

7. Nothing Can Separate Me from God’s Love
In Romans 8:38-39, we’re told that as God’s children there is nothing that can separate us from Him.
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 8:38-39
God’s love for you never changes.
His love for you is no different when you feel close to Him compared to the hardest, darkest moments.
8. I’m God’s Co-Worker
Part of our true identity in Christ is that we are co-workers with God.
The Bible encourages us with a mission to share the love of Christ with others.
As God’s co-workers, we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain.
2 Corinthians 6
Friend, you are here for a reason.
9. I Can Lean on Christ
In Philippians, we’re given the good news that we’re not to live in this world alone.
Further, we learn that we’re not meant to rely on our own strength.
I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
Philippians 4:13
Through our new life in Christ, we can be confident that through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can do all things.

10. I’m Complete
The truth of God tells me that my identity in Christ is based on His work and not mine. Through Christ, we are complete.
In Christ, you have been brought to fullness.
Colossians 2 tells us that we don’t have to worry about the opinions of others.
This does not mean that we shouldn’t seek to grow in different areas. This simply means that at the root, we’re valued, loved, and part of God’s family no matter when or where we are.
11. I’m Forgiven
Sadly, when people think of the Christian life, they think of the primary value being eternal life.
And while eternal life is wonderful, we can easily forget one of the most important aspects of our faith.
Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
Ephesians 4:32
Friend, when you mess up, you can cast away any internal condemnation.
As part of God’s family, you are forgiven always.
Forgiveness Does Not Mean Reconciliation
Unfortunately, some within the church weaponize this Scripture when a woman or marginalized person seeks justice or distance from a perpetrator.
This is wrong.
Friend, we’ve all been hurt deeply by others. This will continue while on earth. However, when we forgive, we do not have to reconcile.
Forgiveness means releasing the anger towards another so that it doesn’t destroy you. This is not an instant snap of the fingers.
Forgiveness is a process.
Give yourself lots of grace and allow yourself to process pain so you can find freedom.

Excellent book for the faith-filled mom to learn more about the brain and its impact on behavior.
12. My Citizenship is Greater
With all the negativity in the news as it relates to politics, Friend, be encouraged that our citizenship is not to a country.
Scripture encourages us, that in the end, we are citizens of heaven.
But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,
Philippians 3:20
In the end, our ultimate allegiance isn’t for our country or a particular local church, but for God’s eternal kingdom.
13. I’m at Rest
Friend, it’s a blessing to know that no matter what we do or what we experience in everyday life, we can rest in Him.
Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
Philippians 1:6
He is the One Who works out our faith. Even when you struggle with doubt or confusion, He’s still working and will never leave you.
14. I’m Truly Free
One of the biblical truths we cling to is that Jesus ascended to heaven and left His followers with the Spirit of God.
In Romans, we are encouraged even more about the Holy Spirit and our identity in Christ.
Through Christ Jesus, the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.
Romans 8:38
Sweet Sister, you are under the law of the Spirit of Life.
When you feel overwhelmed with the darkness of this world or your circumstances, ask the Lord to help you experience life.
Watch for what He does.
15. I’m Royalty
Scripture tells us that we are grafted into the family of God.
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
1 Peter 2
Specifically, in 1 Peter, believers in Christ are called a royal priesthood.
This does not mean that we are better than others.
In fact, we’ve been set apart to share Him with the world. This means we love others compassionately.
16. I’m God’s Creation
Part of your identity in Christ is that you’ve been created by God Himself.
One definition of workmanship describes the created object as the result of the hard work and skill of the creator.
We are God’s handiwork created in Christ Jesus to do good works, for which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Ephesians 2:10
When you experience a challenge to your identity, remember that God created you with a specific purpose.

I LOVE this stunning journaling and coloring bible.
17. I’m Called to Love Myself
Whatever the specifics, Jesus tells us that God has plans for you to love:
- Him
- Yourself
- Your Neighbor
Yes.
In Matthew 22:39, Jesus tells His followers that they must love themselves to love their neighbors.
As a church, we’ve blown this message and failed to share it.
Self-care and self-love is NOT a selfish option. It’s an essential.
You must care for you, Friend.
What does this look like in your life?
