“Does anybody know how to use unit studies? And how do we incorporate them into our homeschool?”

And here’s my answer.

Traditional School vs Homeschool

It often takes homeschool moms (especially those of us with an education background) a few years before we finally “get it”.

The traditional school system does not equate optimal learning and education. The truth is that a system is meant to serve the masses. Homeschooling, on the other hand, allows families to provide individualized and targeted instruction to their specific student(s).

So going back to how to theme-based learning tools, start with this in mind.

“Homeschooling is NOT school at home.”

This means that you don’t have to teach each subject in isolation. Rather, you can teach with a more holistic approach.

What is a Unit Study?

A unit study is a topic-based approach to learning multiple subject areas using a defined theme. For example, you may want to study Hurricanes or the Presidents of the United States.

A good unit study will incorporate reading, writing, spelling, math, and geography elements surrounding the major topic.

How to Choose Unit Studies

Using your child’s interest, choose a topic to explore for some time. Maybe they want to learn about famous inventors, for example.

Search through Pinterest. You’ll be amazed at the number of FREE resources available on a wide range of topics like this homeschool chemistry unit study.

My friend Randi from Peanut Butter Fish Lessons has tons of FREE high-quality unit studies available. Lapbooks are another unit study learning tool. This Owl Facts Lapbook is a great option for a child interested in owls or birds.

A Holistic Approach

Some new homeschooling moms wonder about how to incorporate unit studies into the homeschool plan. The underlying concern is rooted in the belief that unit studies add…

One more thing on the homeschool plate.

However, unit studies are used to hit multiple subjects while focusing on a subject of interest.

Don’t Add Anything to Your Plate

You do not have to ADD a unit study to the traditional homeschool curriculum. Use it as your primary learning tool.

Think of it this way.

  • Curriculum,
  • Unit studies,
  • Books,
  • Field trips,
  • Videos

These are TOOLS to support learning. None of these learning tools are perfect, but many are useful.

Recap: How to Use Unit Studies

Unit studies are a great way to make learning fun and engaging! Use them as a tool to support learning.

In the end, do your best to have fun. These years go by quickly so it’s important to enjoy learning with your kids if you can.
